Sector with a platform company

Agri-food

Food and preserved vegetables for major retailers: installed capacity, certifications and decades-long relationships with European chains. It is led by Acico, and the sector grows on that platform.

The sector

What it covers, exactly

  1. Preserved pulses

Cooked and packed chickpeas, beans and lentils, in retail and food-service formats: the product that keeps installed capacity running all year round.

  2. Vegetables and vegetable medleys

Green beans, peas, mixed vegetables and vegetable combinations, where the year is set by the harvest and the retailer’s calendar.

  3. Tomato and sauces

Fried tomato, plain tomato and vegetable-based sauces: an everyday, fast-moving product in the major retailers’ basket.

  4. Ready-to-eat meals

Ready meals made from pulses and vegetables, where consumption is growing and margin is defended through recipe, format and service.

  5. Private label and co-packing

Producing for retailers’ own brands and for third parties. It requires capacity, up-to-date certification and a relationship of years with the buyer: three things that cannot be improvised.

Why here

Europe’s larder is made in plants nobody visits

Preserved vegetables are a staple food: they are bought in any cycle, fit into any basket and reach the shelf through a handful of chains that demand volume, certification and reliability. Whoever has installed capacity, approved quality and years of relationship with those buyers holds a position that is hard to replicate, even if their name does not appear on the packaging.

That has been Acico’s position since 1970, in Cortes de Navarra, with one of the largest preserved-vegetable capacities in Spain. On that base the sector grows by building, not by starting from scratch: adding capacity, recipes or range to a platform that already serves European retail.

Criteria

What adds to the platform

The traits that count in a company in the sector, and those that do not.

In-house production, with installed capacity and up-to-date certification

A brand without a factory, relying on third parties to produce

Fast-moving products: pulses, vegetables, tomato, ready meals

Niche gourmet, with neither volume nor recurrence

Retail customers with relationships of many years

A single customer accounting for almost all sales

Plant and quality teams with their own expertise

A factory without in-house expertise

A long-term industrial commitment

An activity with no continuity beyond the cycle
